Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing

So here it is. The final piece of the puzzle. An Australian site have posted pictures of the SLS AMG Gullwing, a car that’s supposed to be released at next weeks IAA 2009. It seems a little coincidental that the pictures should be leaked on the same day McLaren choose to unveil their MP4-12C

We’ve known most details of the SLS for a while now so the pictures are what puts the whole picture together. Under the bonnet is a 6.3 liter AMG tuned V8 which delivers 571bhp and 650Nm of torque. 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 195mph. The price will be around €150,000 when it goes on sale next year.

  1. If it was just a new car I’d call it ugly, but it is a neo-retro homage to its ancestor, that has to evoke a design from the past with a modern touch. And it does.

  2. It is an ugly duckling – it’s not going to sell. If I would be a Mercedes exec responsible for this car, I would have it redesigned before releasing no matter how good technology it is.

  3. This is an UGLY machine. A design abortion. This car, much as a camel, is a horse designed by committee. Problem is, a camel is so much more beautiful.

I’m guessing that MB picked some young hotshot Transportation Design college graduate (Hello, Art Center, are you the culprit?)and gave him free rein. Everybody loved his original concept! Then the MB internal design establishment said to the designer,”tone it down a little”,yes? This process went on until the finished, approved design bore no resemblance to the original concept.

What can one expect from the design bureau that created the Maybach? Well, one can always luxuriate in ugliness, I guess.

Shouldn’t we now change the acronym AMG to UGH?
